pH CORRECTION FILTERS

Treat acidic water and increase alkalinity by raising the pH of the water source

WHAT IS pH CORRECTION?

When low levels of pH and alkalinity are in the groundwater, the pH is adjusted by way of the pH correction filter containing either Calcite or Magnesium Oxide.

The low pH level of water is a result of numerous factors, including low alkalinity, chemical composition (especially presence of carbonates, chlorides, sulphates, CO2) and temperature.

Calcite (Calcium carbonate, CaCO3) and Magnesium Oxide (MgO) is a natural substance used to increase the alkalinity of the water and thereby alleviating the corrosive nature thereof.

As the water makes contact with the calcite or magnesium oxide, the media used slowly dissolves and increases the alkalinity and pH level of the water

Filtration Process

1

The low pH water is circulated or passed through the pH correction tank either directly from the bore hole submersible pump or by means of circulation closed loop with a centrifugal surface pump. As the water makes contact with the calcite or magnesium oxide, the media slowly dissolves and increases the alkalinity and pH level of the water.

Although the FRP vessel is sized according to the alkalinity of the water, the contact time between the water and calcite will be optimised during commissioning of the filter. Once commissioned the time and period of circulation will be set accordingly.

Since contact time is dependent on the amount of times the water makes contact with the calcite, as well as the flowrate of the water, the pH can/should be further adjusted if needed.
